In God's Garden is a family saga. It spans the 1952 Revolution that ousted King Farouk and established the first republic in Egypt's seven thousand year history, as well as the three presidents who governed Egypt since Gamal Abd al-Nasser, Anwar al-Sadat, and Hosni Mubarak. These times were turbulent. The story tells how a middle class family, occupied with day-to-day living, is pulled and tugged by shifts in policies.
And what if the main character is a female coming of age in this conservative society that revolves around traditions and culture? What passions and worries rage within her? What dreams and hopes inspire her? Can she fulfill them? The story provides a window into her life and thoughts as they entangle with those of her family and society.

Recently, Anne-Marie Slaughter created a firestorm with her June-July Atlantic article, "Why Women Still Can't Have It All." Another riff on the fact that, in the dance of life, not only are women led to take their steps backwards, but they must do so in high heels.Add to these strictures, life in the midst of a Muslim culture, plagued by war, political upheavals, and untimely personal tragedies, and you get a sense of what life is like for Nadia Salem. We meet her as a young Egyptian girl born near the middle of the last century and follow her journey to adulthood, marriage, family, a PhD from an American university, and a career as a professor. Her skirts are too short, heels too high, and her students have "too much fun."
Nadia's journey spans the regimes of King Farouk, Gamal Abdel Nasser, Anwar al-Sadat, and Hosni Mubarak. Ultimately, political chaos breeds shortages of basic needs that no amount of money can buy and the daily struggle for survival overwhelms. Nadia's struggle to bring herself and her children to a place where they may fulfill their potential propels this carefully written novel to its conclusion.
Women round the world would benefit from reading how Nadia's Muslim faith gives her the strength to accept the responsibilities of wife, mother, sister, daughter, daughter-in-law, and professor.
This book provides a backdrop to the current unrest in Egypt and the murmurings of the Arab spring. In God's Garden there are abundant fruits!

In God Garden edition by Mahassen Ahmad Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
A very enjoyable book. I became so engrossed in the vivid descriptions of Nadia Salem and her family living in Egypt. I did not want to put the book down. This book gave me insight to a culture I know very little about. It made me want to know more. Well written!
At this time when we are all following the 'Arab Spring' activities going on in Egypt, it is refreshing to read how life was for the middle class in Egypt in the 1940's through the 1960's. Ms. Ahmad presents a wonderful semi-autobiographical account of her family living in a village on the Upper Nile, Cairo and Alexandria.
Mrs. Ahmad's book presents a lively and colorful picture of life in the Egypt before the recent upheavels. I was quite taken by the accounts of family life both as a child and as an adult in a culture about which I knew very little. This book is especially pertinent today as we try to understand and sympathize with the political upheavals in that part of the world.
I kept trying to put it down but, I kept going back to see what Nadia was doing next.I stayed up til 2 a.m. finishing it.
In the book IN GOD'S GARDEN I had the opportunity to live with the characters in their own culture and see a new view of my own life. Exciting "read".
The novel provides a good insight into Egyptian, Arabic, and Muslin culture, written by one who was born and raised in Egypt and has first-hand knowledge. Well written and moving.
This was a very interesting book. It took me to a totally different country and type of family life. I especially liked following the life of the characters. I hope the author will do a sequel of life in the United States for the family. I plan to be at the book signing tomorrow.
